Back By Popular Demand: Between You & Me

Dim the lights, open the curtains, cue the title screen. By the graces of the Aussies that go by the name of Between You & Me, we have now entered a new era. One we like to call the “Fuck Around and Find Out Era”. It’s one where a band like BYAM is given the rights to show off and exude as much pretentious air as they would like simply because they are continuing to move forward in their career without a label that didn’t care and only promoted when it was convenient.
Take a gander into their sophomore album, Armageddon, specifically track five. It’s one that doesn’t put aside their indifferences to their former label or any label for that matter. It’s one that has that certain je ne sais quoi; that edge of BYAM that shows they can be who they are without someone breathing down their necks and a stack of papers that determine their livelihood.
They released their sophomore album in 2021, toured and broke up with thelabelwhoshallnotbenamed in 2022 and then came the year of our lord and savior 2023, the redemption year. They became independent and live in a foreign country – there’s no LA or NYC where big names hear them. They had to make their noise as loud as they could and that is exactly what they’ve been doing. It was nearly a sink or swim situation and I’ll tell ya, BYAM swam like they were in the Olympics going for the group gold medal.
They entered the year of 2023 with that same headstrong notion and released their first independent single, “Nevermind”. You know the same one that has the music video where Matty Healy from The 1975 is aimlessly driving in the background. Yeah, that one. It was a song that set them off into navigating the space of being independent and what that meant for them and figuring out what path was next. It was a steady year of some tours and finding their footing, one that was very much needed. They ended on a bang(er) and released their second single, “YEAH!” the song that was added onto the lists of “BYAM changed their sound”, “Bring back the old BYAM”, but as listener and a fan, I’m here to say that whatever ingredients were put in this record, keep it coming. We need more of it.
Speaking of “YEAH!” the hit 2004 movie Sleepover called, you’re needed on the soundtrack.
This isn’t a band you toss to the side and hope they do whatever you tweet at them. They know what they want and will find a way to get there. A band full of resilience that I genuinely think comes at no better time than to begin a new year with their own headlining tour. A band that was probably told they wouldn’t be able to make it farther than a stone skip across a measly little pond. Yet, here there are. A headlining tour going across the UK (with a sold-out show and many more with low ticket warnings) and North America/Canada (lets sellout the whole tour!!!).
As one of the great singer songwriters of this generation, Justin Bieber, once said, “Never Say Never”. Between You & Me aren’t down for the count, matter of fact as far as anyone who supports them is concerned, they won. The belts are on, the banners have come down, and they’re champions.
Don’t miss them on any stops of the Sh!t Yeah Tour. Starts February 16th in Bristol and ends April 6th in Anaheim, CA
