Concert Review: Afterlife At The Altar
Review by Lindsey V. Britt
The iconic Masquerade in Atlanta, Georgia, where all the greats perform, has just opened its newest room The Altar in Underground Atlanta. With a 250-capacity you are able to have the experience of an intimate concert with the vibrancy of a concert hall.
Afterlife At The Altar was a night of the female lead pop/punk-rock artists that are tomorrow’s next music sensations. With a dress in your afterlife theme, I went dressed in a concert fit perfect for a ghost band and had a night of fun, energetic music that I can say “I saw them when” about.
Starting the night was Zoe Bayani, a 22-year-old Atlanta-based independent singer-songwriter, drawing inspiration from 90’s soft grunge and nostalgia 70’s americana. Opening with her song “Spring Cleaning”, as Bayani’s set continued with “Contemplate “, and “Body Farm”, her band got really into the rhythm and vibe of the night, hyping up the audience.
The next artist of the night was Atlanta alternative artist Caroline Reilly, whose set included her hits “Pieces”, and “MR. 262”. My favorite part of Reilly’s set was when she performed a melody explaining how a lot of songs have the same chord progression, which included Sia’s “Cheap Thrills”, TLC’s “No Scrubs”, Oasis’s “Wonderwall”, and TOTO’s “Africa”, followed by her song “Not My Fault”.
Coming in from Nashville, Tennessee was Natalia Taylar, the co-headliner of the night, it was her first out-of-Nashville show. Singing her songs “Bad Guy”, “Lovesick “, and “Better off Dead “, encouraging everyone there to be in the moment of it all.
To end the show the highly anticipated artist of the night, Atlanta’s own pop-punk-rock band glimmers took the stage, their set featured “Scared To Lose”, “Jaded”, “The First Thing”, the band’s latest single “Back To Hell” and their cover of “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga. glimmers lead singer Maggie Schneider sang her song “695 North Avenue”, which is about The Masquerade’s former location and how much The Masquerade means to Schneider. This showcase was just a tease of what’s to come from glimmers upcoming tour starting next month.
The night ended with an impromptu acoustic encore by Schneider after the audience started screaming one more song! Schneider sang a Taylor Swift melody, (All Taylor’s Version of course).
Be sure to check out all of the amazing acts from the night on your favorite music streaming platform, and if you’re in the Atlanta area look up The Masquerade and see what amazing concerts like this one are happening.
