Film Premiere: Twisters, an Electrifying and Heartfelt Tale
Review & Photos by Yising Kao
I attended the Twisters film premiere in Los Angeles on July 11th at Westwood Regency Village Theatre and it was phenomenal! The red carpet was decorated in yeehaw style with Tyler’s (Glen Powell’s character) red truck from the film, stacks of hay, and a tornado arch that lit up with lightning. Glen Powell made a grand entrance to the red carpet in style, in one of the tornado-chasing trucks from the film, and his cute puppy, Brisket, arrived in a following car. It was an honor to meet Brisket, who’s featured in Powell’s successful thirst traps. Powell was super sweet and stopped to take many photos with fans. My friend and I were so excited to see Powell, along with Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos! We also got to see Benson Boone, who has a song featured in the movie, "Death Wish Love,” and we met influencer/interviewer Jake Shane – he’s hilarious and I complimented his recent interview with Joe Jonas. After experiencing the chaotic red carpet and receiving funny shirts featured in the film that say “Not my first tornadeo,” we walked into the theater and Powell was kind enough to take a photo with me – I gotta say, he’s beautiful in person and a rom-com king.
In the theater, Edgar-Jones and Powell stepped out in front of the screen with Lee Isaac Chung, but they were interrupted by a PETA protester who jumped up in front of them and started yelling – it was wild but thankfully, security took her away.
Glen Powell shared to the audience, “Lee Isaac Chung is such a special filmmaker because no matter how epic this movie gets, he keeps the heart at its core. It’s about the characters and it’s about this community. And also, I want to thank the community of Oklahoma for opening up their arms to us to make this movie. This movie you’re going to see, it’s going to blow your mind in every way. And it’s because this is made with Oklahoma and it’s made with all the department heads that really brought it. So, we had amazing team support here so we’re just really grateful for the entire cast and the entire crew.”
Daisy Edgar-Jones shared: “We’re so thrilled to have you guys here. Twisters is a film for audiences, it’s a film to be watched on the big screen with the loudest sound system so you feel like you’re chasing these storms with us. And making this film was such a joy, I mean, what a cast, what a director. I feel so lucky to be a part of it. We hope you enjoy!”
Anthony Ramos shared: “This cast was the best cast you could ever imagine being able to work with. Y’all are just the most amazing humans on Earth and I just want to say thank you to them, to the crew, to Universal, and the producers. But I really want to say thank you to y’all like we ain’t got no movie without y’all, man. Like if y’all didn’t show up, there’s no film, right? So, give yourselves a round of applause.”

*General storyline spoilers ahead*
Twisters, directed by Lee Isaac Chung, is an exhilarating tale following two different groups of people who get a thrill out of chasing tornadoes with opposite intentions. This film is loosely connected to the 1996 film called Twister, similarly, set in Oklahoma, but it’s a complete stand-alone story. I had little knowledge about storm-chasing, so I was going into the film blindly and I loved learning about how people chase tornados, research data about them, and have to know how to take shelter during storms. What I love about this film is that it shows how two strangers bond over their same passions for storm-chasing and helping people who suffer from the destruction of tornados as much as they can. With electrifying scenes that will make your heart race, mixed with heartfelt moments, this film was definitely made to watch on the big screen. One funny moment from watching it in the theater was when everyone (including me and my friend) started cheering during a scene with Powell’s character walking in the rain wearing a white shirt and cowboy hat – Thank you to the crew for including that!
After losing three of her friends to a tornado, Kate suffers from PTSD and eventually gets inspired to start storm-chasing again, realizing that she can make an impactful difference in her hometown. Daisy Edgar-Jones (Kate Cooper) and Glen Powell (Tyler Owens) have such great chemistry and their characters beautifully express how people shouldn’t judge someone based on the first impression. Twisters captures the loving community in Oklahoma that strives to take care of each other during a tornado storm. It’s a fresh, thrilling and adventurous film and I recommend watching it in theaters, out on July 17th!
