Song Review: “Flimsier” by King Krule
By Alana Brown-Davis
This Friday, British red headed troubadour Archy Marshall also known as King Krule released his fourth album “Space Heavy.” Like many of his projects, the themes are driven by melancholia and a sense of existential dread that are carried by the light baritone of his voice and the synchronicity of hazy, reverbed guitars. Krule writes about romance differently. He’s become well-known for writing ballads like album standout “Flimsier” that tell of a love that’s been lost, and what led up to that point. Filled with pain that he attempts to lighten throughout the course of the tune, he comes to terms with the end of a relationship that was beautiful but limited in its strength.
A poet at heart, King Krule’s lyrics evoke longing but in a way that seems withdrawn from the world or the particular space he’s in. Marshall has never shied away from topics of mental health or despair, oftentimes displaying his feelings in a way that’s heavy and intense. That rawness that has become a well-known quality in his work is what continues to push his music into a niche category.
