Interview: Savage Bunny Madness With About Bunny

Interview by Lindsey V. Britt

UK alt-rock band About Bunny who crash landed into the scene with their song “Special” in 2020 is gearing up to perform in new cities opening for WREX, along with playing at The Gathering Sounds while anticipating the release of their new E.P. Savage.

Can you tell us about the making of your latest song “Married With Kids”?

“Married with Kids” was initially inspired by Alanis Morisettes ‘Unsent’ where she goes through her ex flames per verse like a journey through her dating life and exposing their behaviours. And I always loved that idea and concept and so I started “Married with Kids” with the same structure and it went from there.

I heard About Bunny started over a mutual love of Debbie Harry, what about her inspires you all?

For me it’s her energy when she’s on stage, or that you can hear on the records. It’s the perfect combo of feisty raw edge and cool calm and collected. Blondie’s music is rock with that pop sensibility of a great catchy chorus and storytelling lyrics which we also love. Also her iconic style and fashion.

Now I have to ask as a Debbie/Blondie fan myself, do you have a favorite Debbie Harry, Blondie, or even The Wind in the Willows song?

It would be “One Way or Another” or “Atomic.”

How excited are you to be opening for WREX at the London and Bournemouth shows of their EP release tour?

Yeah, we’re really looking forward to the next few shows with WREX and our mate Tom Saint. We’ve not played down in Bournemouth before either so that’ll be cool.

You’re playing at the new Gathering Sounds festival next month. Are you nervous about being on the ground floor of a new music festival?

We can’t wait for Gathering Sounds. Again we’ve never played up in Stockton-On-Tees before so another town we can’t wait to bring the Bunny madness to. More excited than nervous I’d say, and we love the headliners Snayx and are looking forward to seeing them too.

Do you have any plans to do a US show anytime soon?

That would be so amazing but nothing in the pipeline yet! It’s hard as an independent band to get the funds together to play all the way over in the states, but the second it’s possible for us, we’ll be there!

Is there a dream venue you would love to perform at?

I think all the classics like the Garage, Hammersmith Apollo, an iconic festival like Glastonbury or Reading and Leeds and I mean lets be honest…Wembley would be a dream one day!

After releasing Mixtape Vol.1 last year, are there any plans for a Mixtape Vol. 2?

We released Mixtape Vol.1 and called it so because it was an amalgamation of all the tracks we’d first written when we started the band that didn’t feel like they were all coming from the same hymn sheet. We love all the tracks individually but they didn’t feel like a story…hence the ‘Mixtape’ Title. Glue, 7 to 11 and Married with Kids are all from our upcoming E.P. Savage which will be out soon.

Since your band is named after the character Bunny in The Big Lebowski, if you had to pick another character from the film to name your band after who would it be and why?

I think it would have to be ‘The Dude’ purely because that sounds like the best band name!

Do you have a fandom name and if not what should it be?

Ooh we actually don’t, but we think we should give our fans the creative control on that one!

What has been your favorite thing about brat summer so far?

Well its not the weather we’re having over here in the UK. It’s rained more than its shined! But “Von Dutch” is on our hype up playlist when we’re getting ready for a show! And we love the new collab with Billie Eillish.

Lastly, do you have a recommendation? This can be absolutely anything from a place to a series, another artist, a favorite meal, anything.

We have a band tradition of after rehearsals going to Meat Liquor for House Grogs, Monkey Fingers, and Dead Hippie burgers!

Be sure to check out “Married With Kids” along with their upcoming E.P. Savage coming soon!
