Interview: Somewhere In-Between With Bau Cat

Welsh band Bau Cat, formed in 2023 by Abby Butler, Jim Davies, and Jack Wells, have started getting noticed for their unique style and sound. We chatted with Butler about their musical journey of trying to find a space somewhere in-between.
How did Bau Cat go from a duo to a trio?
Me and Jim met a couple of years back and from the get-go, we always wanted to find a drummer. We never felt we were settled as a duo, I think we always knew there was a third soul out there! We met Jack at a local music festival and started jamming a couple of months later.
Where did the name Bau Cat come from?
I spent a few years out in Vietnam and Bau Cat was the name of a street I’d see almost everyday.
What’s the story behind your song “Night Only Knows”? It’s my favorite!
The initial idea and riff for the song came around whilst we were living up in Sheffield. Me and Jim anyways, so it was a fractured time in a lot of ways. We were heading backwards and forwards to Wales rehearsing and gigging a lot. It was a real Frankenstein kinda song, pieced together with various bits and pieces from a bunch of songs ideas over a period of months really. We knew the riff was cool and wanted to get the mood of the song to match up.
Who are some of your musical influences?
Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Kris Kristofferson are all masters at songwriting especially lyrically. Nude Party, Cut Worms, Mystery Jets, Arcade Fire, Mikes Kane and the Evils are some bands we been listening to recently!
We listen to listen all kinds of music and are Influenced soo much by so many things!

Is there a band you would love to open for one day?
Oracle Sisters! We’ve got tickets to see them in Liverpool can’t wait!
What is the music scene in North Wales like compared to other countries and areas?
We have lots of wonderful bands and artists all over North Wales. There are some incredibly talented people around and some wonderful people who are putting gigs and events on. I like the scene it’s nothing like London or New York or whatever but it’s full of amazing people so that for me is cool.
Would you ever consider doing Eurovision?
Probably not ya know but that’s ok!
Since your band is called Bau Cat, and I’m assuming you like cats, I was wondering who your favorite fictional cat is?
Well, I love the theme song of Top Cat! The indisputable leader of the gang… that guy! He’s ace him!
Lastly, do you each have a recommendation? This can be anything from a movie to a book, place, advice, etc.
North Wales! Anglesey, Snowdonia anywhere around there is magic!
