Interview: Party of One With Josh Gilligan
Interview by Lindsey V. Britt
Nashville-based musician, songwriter, and filmmaker Josh Gilligan has just released his new single “500 Questions,” off of his upcoming debut album Party of One out January 24th.
What was it like creating your upcoming debut album Party of One?
It was a really nice and calm process overall. I was either working alone or with very close friends. I did most of the recording at my house and took the productive days as they decided to show up. I’d get a band in and knock out a song in a day, or tinker with the others over time. I have a hard time completing larger projects sometimes, and I’m really happy to have this one ready to go.
What is your favorite song off the album?
I would say it’s currently a toss-up between “Tightrope” and “500 Questions.” Hard to pick a favorite though. I’m happy with all of them in different ways.
How did you get started in music?
My dad was a trumpet player growing up, and I thought that was super cool. So I picked up the trumpet when I was 11 and learned a bit about how to read music and kind of found my footing. Then my older brother showed me some Green Day songs in middle school and I started learning bass. I got a small recording setup going by the time I was in high school and started making joke songs. And since then I’ve just kind of always stayed interested in writing and recording songs.
Who are some of the artists that inspire you?
Currently, I’m touring with Medium Build and I have been inspired by his live performances. I’m learning a lot about how to perform with just myself and a guitar through watching him. On the recorded end, I’ve been listening to a lot of Men I Trust since we saw them at Outside Lands earlier this year. It was one of the best sets I’ve seen in a long time.
What was the first concert you attended?
Underoath, Thrice, and The Bled at House of Blues Orlando.
What is the most memorable gig you’ve played so far?
Playing ACL for two weekends with Medium Build was pretty memorable. On the solo front, my recent solo sets in Europe have been really enriching and fun. The crowds were so respectful and quiet, I almost didn’t even know how to handle it. I will never forget these shows.
A lot of festivals for next year are starting to get announced, can we be expecting you on any lineups?
None at the moment.
I saw that you’re a filmmaker, how important to you is it to Incorporate music into your film projects?
It’s extremely important. Music breathes life into visuals and helps us link them to memories and feelings. They go hand in hand for sure.
I heard you like working on vintage music equipment, what is the coolest piece of equipment you have worked on?
As a hobby, I’ve bought and sold a lot of fun instruments, but my favorite piece and biggest labor of love is my Wurlitzer 206 student piano. I found it in Tallahassee, FL in 2009 for $400 and painted it red. Since then I’ve swamped the preamp a few times, fixed broken keys, whatever it takes to keep it singing. It’s the most special instrument that I own and has made its way onto a lot of my recordings.
Since you live in Nashville, what’s your favorite spot to hear music?
I really like the blue room, the five spot, obviously the Ryman is a special experience. There are so many great places.
With the holidays coming up do you have any traditions you’re excited for?
I love laying low and spending time with my family. Watching Home Alone a ton of times. Leaving the fire going. Just relaxing as much as possible and trying to stay present for everything.
Do you have a recommendation? It can be anything from a restaurant to advice, whatever you’d like it to be…
Buy a neck pillow.
