Interview: Agony With SM6
Interview by Lindsey V. Britt
George, Jack, Eliana, Emily, Adam, and Isabel Jones comprise the six-sibling band known as SM6. After performing at Summerfest, the band just released their latest single “Agony.”
You have a new song “Agony” coming out. What can you tell us about the song?
Adam: We’ve been working on this song for a while now, it’s been on the shelf, but we just kept revamping and revamping it, and we got into the studio with some of our producers and co-writers and we finally got the thing put together.
Recently you released a song called “Hands.” What’s the story behind writing that song?
Emily: That’s a good question for Isabel, she is our lyricist.
Isabel: The song is really about cutting off relationships with toxic people because you are trying to better yourself, and you know these people are kind of holding you back and they’re trying to bring you down, and so you wanna become the best version of yourself and so you really need to just cut ties with everyone that’s just negative.
Emily: And no longer good for you.
Isabel: Yes, it’s kind of like a heartbreaking song in a way, because even if you like these people at the time, you know you have to cut them off in your heart cause they are no good for you. That’s what that song’s about.
Is another EP or LP in the works with the new releases?
Adam: We talk about that so often. We want to, we haven’t gotten in the studio or recorded anything of that volume.
Emily: Not just yet.
Adam: We have the library, it’s a giant undertaking and just trying to make time for it.
Emily: We’re definitely looking to though, because we have the content there, we have a lot of songs we’re super excited about.
Adam: It’s like a daily conversation of alright, what are we going to release.
Emily: When are we going to work this, how are we going to get back into the studio.
You recently played at some summer festivals. How was that?
George: It was great.
Eliana: It was amazing.
Adam: It’s worth the mention that we’d never been to a music festival.
Isabel: Nope!
Adam: We did Pride Fest first?
Isabel: Yeah, We did Milwaukee’s Pride Fest two weeks before Summerfest.
Adam: That was our first music festival that we went to, and then we went to Summerfest and that was like the biggest music festival in the world, it was just crazy to be there.
Emily: The stage was massive, like running back and forth you’re like I’m out of breath.
Adam: We’re used to playing the stages that are compact.
Emily: Like a step forward, step back, space like that.
Adam: This was massive. I would look to my left and see Isabel twenty paces down, I would have to run past her in order to get any interaction.
Emily: It was a lot of fun.
I’m sure fans are wondering when the next tour may be?
Emily: We definitely want to. We’re looking to perform more and set up some shows, but there’s nothing set just yet.
Adam: This is another conversation we have like all the time.
George: The tour is like the album. It’s another huge undertaking.
Adam: We are planning some pop-up shows we think in the L.A. area, but nothing to announce, unfortunately, not yet.
My favorite song of yours is “Let Me Be Happy” and the music video takes place at a doughnut shop. I’m wondering what your favorite doughnut flavor is?
Emily: I’m weird, so I don’t really like doughnuts, well I do but I’m not into sweets. I was always a big fan of glazed blueberry, or just glazed.
Isabel: I usually like just a vanilla doughnut or strawberry.
Jack: I like long johns.
Adam: Chocolate and sprinkles.
Eliana: I like strawberry.
George: Glazed.
Where do you see the band in 10 years?
Adam: Selling out, going on arena tours worldwide.
George: That’s the end goal.
Adam: We’ve been talking about that for so long, just being able to do shows worldwide.
Isabel: And to just meet different people from different cultures, it would just be so fun to be able to do that.
George: We’re still branching because we just did London this past November, so now we’re talking about doing that again and then branching out even further.
Emily: That, with continuing releasing music, and then music videos on top of that would be great as well.
Is there a city you are all dreaming of playing?
Emily: Australia, we would love to play there!
Isabel: Literally this week we were talking about Australia.
What is the craziest playlist title you’ve seen one of your songs on?
Isabel: There’s a lot of fun ones.
Eliana: I think I remember one. It’s not a stage, it’s not a stage mom. I thought that was pretty funny.
Isabel: One was something like My psychotic ex or something like that.
Who are some of your top artists that you want to see in concert?
Adam: We don’t go to many concerts actually. I haven’t seen The All-American Rejects, or I would love to see Imagine Dragons.
Emily: I would’ve loved to have seen Harry Styles but he’s on a break right now. But if he ever plays a show I’ll try to get tickets.
George: For me obviously One Direction but they’re broken up. I started listening to their music after they broke up. I’m like oh they have great music, now they’re not together, so that sucks.
Isabel: Chase Atlantic would be pretty cool to see live.
If you were all on Survivor who would win?
Adam: I don’t know if can answer this unbiasedly.
Eliana: I feel like George would.
George: I can like run really fast.
Isabel: George can tolerate a lot.
Emily: He’d just be meditating like the whole time surviving off coconuts.
Last question, do you each have a recommendation? This can be anything from a movie, place, food, advice, anything you want, and it can be the same or different categories.
Adam: We went to a coffee shop in London, it was called Van Gogh café. Starry night was painted on the ceiling it’s just gorgeous.
Emily: We were just talking about that before the interview.
Eliana: A comic bookstore that I found, it was really good, Golden Apple. Definitely would recommend that.
George: The Last Bookstore. We went there for the first time, it was incredible.
Isabel: As you can tell we love reading but we also love food and coffee. I have advice. Whatever you’re going into as a career, just to really follow your heart, and follow your dreams. Even though it is hard, it’s gonna pay off, and it’s going to be great because you never want to go through life wondering what if, what if I follow that, what if I did this differently, follow your heart.
Emily: Take chances for sure. Live life to its fullest. No regrets.
